The second shift hochschild essay

I believe ideas regarding gender roles are indeed changing with the times and among younger generations, like anything else. Although many individuals still hold traditional beliefs, we can see a shift of women attending college at a higher rate than men, which I feel will have a heavy impact on the job market and who is obtaining what types of jobs and bringing home what type of money. Despite gender (and other; race, sexual orientation, etc.) wage inequality, if women are attending college at higher rates there is eventually going to be a shift in job rates as well, and depending on the jobs, wage rates people are taking home. That being said, I think women who make more money and/or work more hours are not only going to want their spouses to contribute to the "second shift," but are going to demand it as it will be essential in raising a child/putting food on the table/living in a clean environment/etc.

Clearly, all of this will have some effect on congestion and road capacity. Accidents themselves cause as much as a third of congestion (estimates vary a fair bit and depend whether you're talking about highways or city centres), even if there are no changes from different driving behavior. How much changes over all, though - how much more traffic can a highway hold? How much more quickly do you get to school in the morning if you drive at the same speed but don't have to stop at every stop sign just in case there's someone there? We'll find out.

I purchased a Quick 4 transmission controller to replace the [competitor's] controller in my 1970 Chevelle. I had been running the [competitor's] unit for several years and it worked OK, but was a royal pain to program and did not offer multiple tables like the Quick 4 does. My wife was not fond of riding in my Chevelle because it shifted so hard, which was what I wanted. The Quick 4 allows me to have a shifting profile for the wife, one for me, and an additional two to use for whatever. With the flip of a switch or the turn of a knob, I can switch between the tables and please my wife or myself.

The second shift began as a gender critique—ending women’s exploitation by men in the home.  It stands today as one of the strongest critiques of the dominant discourse of our times: a neoclassical economic ideology which naturalizes discrimination and casually explains away pay gaps—even for the highest paid and most educated, ruthlessly destroys lives and habitats around the globe, and is uninterested in substantive democracy.  The second shift is critically important for feminists to retain, not only for its power as an alternative economic idea, but because it actually results in more persons able to provide a greater quantity and quality of care to those around them.  This is because the second shift is also the only concept that legitimizes a synthesis of the three ingredients missing for most of today’s overworked and underpaid wageworkers who would prefer to perform more care: sufficient income, necessary time, and a conceptual framework of care as an immensely valuable human endeavor.
